CBI at 21ABC: Powering Innovation in Lead Battery Tech

CBI was proud to participate in the 21st Asian Battery Conference (21ABC), held in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. As one of the world’s premier battery industry events, 21ABC brought together manufacturers, researchers, OEMs, and policy leaders to explore the future of battery technologies, sustainability, and innovation, with lead batteries firmly in the spotlight.

CBI was at the heart of the discussions, contributing to sessions focused on the evolving role of advanced lead batteries in modern energy systems. A key highlight of the event was the ALBA Workshop, the first of its kind to be hosted in Asia, where CBI joined industry and academic partners to highlight the critical importance of collaborative research in pushing the boundaries of lead battery performance. Equally impactful was CBI’s participation in the Recycle100 session, which explored the circular economy and how lead batteries, with their established infrastructure and near-total recyclability, continue to lead the way in sustainable energy storage.

Throughout the week, CBI experts took the stage to present the latest developments from our global research and innovation programs. Dr. Matt Raiford, CBI’s Senior Technical Manager, delivered a session on the expanding role of lead batteries in energy storage systems and stationary applications. His presentation demonstrated the proven safety, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of lead-based technologies, especially as demand for grid resilience and renewable integration grows across markets.

Dr. Begüm Bozkaya, Technical Manager at CBI, introduced the consortium’s latest Technical Roadmap. The presentation outlined a clear set of performance targets designed to guide the industry’s R&D focus, including improvements in cycle life, charge acceptance, and dynamic performance. These targets ensure that lead batteries remain competitive and innovative across a wide range of applications such as telecoms, UPS, motive power, and energy storage.

CBI’s Executive Director, Alistair Davidson, chaired technical sessions and joined key discussions around policy, regulation, and the future of lead battery technologies.

Innovation in the lead battery sector is accelerating, and CBI’s role is to ensure this momentum is supported by robust scientific research, strategic industry collaboration, and a clear focus on sustainability.
