The Global CBI Battery Innovation Roadmap

The Global CBI Battery Innovation Roadmap brings together expertise from manufacturers, researchers, and end-users across the world to set out clear goals for the lead battery industry and the wider battery ecosystem. It covers the automotive, energy storage, telecom, standby, and motive power sectors, examining how lead batteries and complementary technologies can continue to meet the demands of a rapidly changing global energy landscape.

Chapter Overview

Chapter 1: Introduction and Industry Overview

An overview of the global battery market, CBI's role as a research organisation, and progress made since the last CBI Roadmap. This chapter sets the context for the technical targets and research priorities that follow, including a multi-technology approach covering lead, lithium, sodium, zinc, nickel, and flow batteries.

Chapter 2: Automotive Batteries: ISS, Micro-hybrid and Low Voltage EV

Covers the current state of 12V lead battery technology in start/stop, micro-hybrid, and auxiliary applications. With over 95% of the 12V automotive market still served by lead batteries, this chapter sets out performance goals for cycle life, dynamic charge acceptance, and functional safety to 2035, as EV adoption accelerates globally.

Chapter 3: Batteries for Energy Storage Systems

Examines the rapidly evolving energy storage market, from utility-scale front-of-the-meter applications to commercial and residential behind-the-meter storage. The chapter assesses lead, flow, zinc, and sodium battery technologies against key performance indicators including cycle life, round trip efficiency, and levelised cost of storage (LCOS).

Chapter 4: Batteries for Telecom and Standby Applications

Addresses the growing demand for battery backup driven by hyperscale data centres, generative AI infrastructure, and global telecom expansion. The chapter covers UPS and inverter markets across India, North America, and Europe, and sets out research areas for lead batteries to remain competitive in standby applications.

Chapter 5: Batteries for Motive Power Applications

Focuses on the electrification of forklift fleets, mining vehicles, low speed electric vehicles, and e-rickshaws. Lead batteries currently fulfil 60% of the motive power market. This chapter sets out the performance targets and innovation areas needed to maintain and grow that position in a market projected to reach 35 GWh by 2030.
