Battery experts will meet in Shanghai, China on 5-6 March to review progress developing the next generation of advanced lead batteries. The meeting will be held at the Marriott Renaissance Shanghai Putuo.
The Consortium for Battery Innovation, a newly-formed research group made up of battery companies and research institutions worldwide, is spending two days to review the latest research breakthroughs in the technology amid an expected hike in demand for battery energy storage across the country.
The technical workshop takes place as China’s Department for Energy described lead batteries as a “backbone” national industry as it announced plans to improve the collection rate of lead batteries in a bid to improve its recycling performance. The workshop will also discuss current lead battery recycling technologies employed in Europe and North America-where the current collection and recycling rate for lead batteries is over 99%.
The Consortium – whose company members in China include Shuangdeng Group China Shoto, Shandong Jinkeli Power Sources Technology, Narada Power Source, Shandong Sacred Sun Power Sources and Tianneng Power – plans to discuss market developments in China as well as unveiling research plans for the next two years.
The Consortium, which was previously known as ALABC, has funded pre-competitive research into lead batteries for more than 25 years, ushering breakthroughs such as start-stop battery technology which improves energy efficiency and reduces pollution. Lead batteries are also essential for electric vehicles, with virtually all electric vehicles employing lead batteries for essential safety and back-up functions such as lighting and other in-car safety and security systems.

Notes to editors:
1: The Consortium for Battery Innovation (CBI) is the only global pre-competitive research organization funding innovation in lead batteries for energy storage, motive and automotive applications: www.batteryinnovation.org
2. CBI aims to improve lead battery performance through pre-competitive research, focusing on all applications of lead batteries.
3: Lead batteries currently account for 75 per cent of worldwide rechargeable battery energy storage. As well as starter, lighting and ignition batteries in vehicles, lead batteries support everything from back-up power for data centers, mobile networks and hospitals to e-bikes, forklift trucks, boats and military applications. Increasingly, lead batteries are supporting renewable energy including solar and wind farms and micro-grids.
4: The Consortium’s technical roadmap will be published at the BCI Convention, New Orleans, USA, 28 April-1 May 2019.
5: Director Dr Alistair Davidson is available for interview. Please contact Niamh McLaughlin in the Consortium for Battery Innovation media office on +44 207 833 8090 or email email@example.com
